Current Events Criteria
Directions: Use these guidelines to complete your current events assignment. Remember your due date is available on my web-site. Make sure you know what your due date is. A current event is an important occurrence that significantly impacts society. You may choose any recent topic that interests you. You may use newspapers, magazines, or the internet as sources (newsela.com is a good source) You will probably need more than one source in order to compile enough background information on your topic. You will present an oral explanation of your topic, as well as a Google Slides presentation. Your presentation should be thorough and detailed. You should begin researching your topic about a month before your presentation. I am available to help you find a topic, and to review your progress. All work for the project will be completed at home. If you have any questions, make sure to ask me right away.
Part One: Gathering Information (50)
Provide detailed information on the following. The information may be handwritten on the yellow cards, or typed out.

What is their job? Describe their duties, and how they relate to your topic.
Why are they included in this article?
Where: Where is this event taking place?
Will it impact just this area or other areas as well?
Where is this event in relation to the community you live in?
What: Describe in detail the event, and any important background information that would help your class to understand the event. Make sure to explain how it will impact society.
When: When did this event take place? Were there any factors that took place prior to the event that should be explained? Has it been resolved, or is the event ongoing?
Why: Explain why you feel this event is important. How will it impact you, your community, or society?
What Do You Think: How do you feel about the issues involved in this event? How do you feel about how the event was resolved? If the event is ongoing, how would you resolve it?
Part Two: Presentation (50)
Oral Presentation: You should be prepared to present an oral presentation that explains thoroughly the event you researched. You may use index cards during your presentation, and prepare a Google Slides presentation. You will be graded on your understanding of the topic and on your ability to present information clearly to your class.
Slides Presentation: You will need to develop a presentation using Google Slides. This presentation should be shared with Mrs. Coryer via Google. The presentation must contain:
- Explanation of all of the significant information regarding the content of your topic that shows you have a deep understanding
- Information that is presented in logical order
- Extensive background information that will allow your audience to better understand your topic
